National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week 2013

This week, members of Faces of Homelessness are busy speaking to area colleges and universities about the injustice of homelessness and poverty. The Faces of Homelessness Speakers Bureau challenges myths and sterotypes about homelessness year-round, but this week we work tirelessly in partner with Housing Our Neighbors, students from area colleges and universities, people experiencing homelessness, and other advocates to raise awareness of the symptoms of growing poverty and inequality and enlist community members in the fight to end homelessness.
Join us for the Sleep Out for Housing Justice this Saturday, November 23rd--the culminating event of this years' National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week!
Lanny was homeless for nearly 10 years when he final got housing thanks to the Housing First model. When asked what it felt like to have a home he said, "It made me feel human again." To suffer so greatly that one feels less than human is tragedy of unspeakable magnitude. Fortunately, proven solutions like Housing First exist which can end this suffering. Watch this video by filmmaker and homeless advocate Mark Horvath to learn more about Housing First and to see how housing can revolutionize the life of someone like Lanny by reaffirming their humanity.Speakers Bureau Adminhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09142455699203609773noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5977112743365172717.post-59010756574130742512013-03-04T10:55:00.002-05:002013-03-04T10:55:50.840-05:00The Baltimore Injustice WalkBaltimore's Speakers' Bureau has been hard at work developing a new presentation called the Injustice Walk: a presentation that exposes the harsh inequalities that exist in and around Baltimore's wealthy downtown district. Speakers take students and community members on a guided walk past several notable landmarks of the homeless community and offer many breathtaking insights into the reality of being homeless in Baltimore. This is a perfect opportunity for volunteers, aspiring social workers, or simply curious community members to see the City from an entirely new perspective. Students and faculty who are interested in organizing alternative spring break trips should also consider this unique and visceral learning experience.
Although homelessness has been on the rise since 2009, few films have delved into this growing American tragedy. Here is one film that successfully and eloquently breaks the silence. Endorsed by the National Coalition for the Homeless and the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty, These Storied Streets exposes the pain, hope, and humanity of homelessness across the United States. Keep a look out for its release, anticipated sometime this year.Speakers Bureau Adminhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09142455699203609773noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5977112743365172717.post-33049984470729488012013-01-07T15:38:00.001-05:002013-01-07T15:38:59.648-05:00Word on the Street makes Headlines

On December 21st -the first day of winter and the longest night of the year- we remember those we've lost in our community due to homelessness. December 21st is recognized in cities and towns across the nation as Homeless Persons' Memorial Day. It is a time to remember those we've lost and to reflect on the work we can do as a community to end this great injustice.

Baltimore mourns the loss of 104 people this year whose lives were cut short by the horrific conditions of homelessness. Tragically, this number -already far too high- only counts those who were connected to local services and whose names were made known to the organizers of Homeless Persons' Memorial Day. These people were just like any of us -human-beings with feelings and dreams, friends and family. That they suffered such pain, such unimaginable alienation from their community, is a shameful indicator of the inhumanity of our time.

Let this day mark the beginning of a new era. May we come together and treat each other with the same love and compassion we wish to receive ourselves. No human-being deserves to suffer from sickness or poverty alone; together, we can create a world where no one has to.Speakers Bureau Adminhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09142455699203609773noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5977112743365172717.post-9084238563722339912012-11-21T16:31:00.000-05:002012-11-21T16:31:47.872-05:00A Reason to Feel ThankfulEveryday when I get off of work I think about the myriad of waking nightmares many people face when they don't have housing. Working at a day drop-in center in Baltimore exposes one to the dark side of our society. Every morning when I walk in our front door I have no idea what kind of pain our clients will be going through. Mothers chased out of their home by violence, elderly people forced into poverty by overwhelming medical bills, people ravaged by addictions, depression, discrimination, and economic oppression -these are just a few of the hundreds of stories we see every week. The range of struggles seems infinite and the depth and severity of pain our clients must feel seems just as vast.

In a world where people can be thrown out of their homes I am thankful for the opportunities I have been given and the stability I took for granted for so much of my life. I am thankful I have a home where I am loved and safe and I am deeply thankful that I work with people who fight for a society where this right is shared by everyone.

In light of the holiday, we present an article on homelessness among veterans and what can be done to decrease the number of homeless veterans in the next few years:

Major Hurdles Remain to End Veteran Homelessness

At the Speakers' Bureau, we applaud the efforts described in this article to provide homeless veterans with the resources they need to gain housing, furniture, clothing and utilities. Still, there is a great deal of work to be done to end homelessness among veterans by 2015.

If you know a veteran, thank them for their service today!
